Mark Allen through at Shanghai Masters but Ken Doherty bows out

Ken Doherty has bowed out of the Shanghai Masters, losing 5-2 to world champion Mark Selby, while Mark Allen progressed to a round two meeting with Mark Williams. 

Dubliner Doherty qualified for the first round after a wildcard win over Chinese amateur Huang Jiahao and made Selby work hard for his win today.

Selby raced in to a 3-0 lead but a break of 68 saw the Dubliner take the fourth frame.

The world number one took the next before Doherty claimed the sixth, 70-51, but Selby was not to be denied and clinched the victory in the next frame.

The Leicester man will meet Michael Holt in round two. 

Antrim's Allen, ranked world number nine, claimed a 5-3 win over Andrew Higginson.

Fergal O'Brien will play Zhao Xintong, who beat Marco Fu 5-4.
