Ireland's Fergal O'Brien was a 6-2 winner against Alex Davies in the UK Championship first round.

World number 95 Jamie O'Neill bridged a 57-place ranking gap to beat Mark Joyce 6-2 in a fluent display featuring breaks of 66, 110, 85 and 89.

But Xiao Guodong and Mark King managed to buck the trend with 6-1 wins over Andrew Pagett and Ross Muir respectively.

Xiao led 3-1, with breaks of 56, 72, and 57, as the interval came around in quick time.

And there was no let-up as he wrapped up victory, a 125 break in frame seven putting the seal on a performance even more polished than Xiao's silver mirror-shine shoes.

King also advanced to the second round after an equally comfortable, if significantly longer, match against Muir.
