Barry Hawkins provided the shock of the day at the World Open in Glasgow by knocking out Masters champion Mark Selby 3-2.

Selby took the first frame on a re-spotted black after a break of 46 by Hawkins levelled matters at 54-54.

The pressure clearance seemed to inspire the underdog, though, and he followed it up with a 127 break to level the match.

They also shared the next two frames before Selby had a chance to pinch the decider.

He broke down though and allowed Hawkins to steal in and clear the colours he required for victory.

In the early session, former world champions Stephen Hendry and Mark Williams both opened with 3-0 wins.

Home favourite Hendry saw off Bjorn Haneveer thanks to breaks of 55 and 76 as he sought to turn around his unconvincing early-season form.

Williams looked even more impressive, runs of 80 and 96 helping him see off Brazil Igor Figueiredo in just 38 minutes.

‘To win 3-0 is all you can ask for,’ seven-times world champion Hendry, who will play Mark Davis in the last 32, said on www.worldsnooker.com.

‘The drive here took longer than the match and it's nice to come through unscathed.’ Next up for Williams is in-form Ali Carter.

The Welshman said: ‘I won in about 40 minutes today but I could lose in the same time against Ali. I think there will be a lot of surprises in this tournament.’

Elsewhere in the last-32 draw, Jamie Cope will meet Dave Harold in an all-Stoke clash while Irishman David Morris will make his TV debut against world champion Neil Robertson.
