World number two Stephen Maguire has been interviewed by police as part of an inquiry into alleged match-fixing.

The probe centres on Maguire's match against Jamie Burnett at the the UK Championship in Telford on 15 December, which has been the subject of investigations by World Snooker and the Gambling Commission.

A statement released by Maguire's management company confirmed the Scot met Strathclyde Police Fraud Squad on Monday.

The interview came just two days before Maguire starts his campaign at the World Snooker Championships against Burnett.

A statement from Maguire's representatives, 110sport, read: 'The snooker professional met with police officers and answered a series of questions relating to their investigation into alleged match-fixing from a match at the UK Championship in December.

'At this time there will be no further comment and it would be appreciated if the press would respect Stephen's wishes to focus on getting himself ready for his first-round match at this year's World Championship.'

World Snooker launched an inquiry into Burnett's 9-3 first round defeat to his fellow Scot following unusual betting patterns which saw a flurry of wagers placed on that exact scoreline.

Burnett missed a straightforward black in the 12th frame which would have made it 8-4. But the 33-year-old, who denies any wrongdoing, claims he was aware of the betting situation going into the final frame against Maguire and that fear of being accused of match-fixing affected his play.
