Ken Doherty has won his first round match at the Honghe Industrial China Open in Beijing but fellow Dubliner Fergal O'Brien has been knocked out.

The 1997 World Champion defeated English player Mike Dunne 5-2. Doherty pocketed a tournament high run of 140 in the opening frame against Dunn, but slipped 2-1 down after his opponent won a scrappy second frame and then knocked in a 91 run.

But breaks of 42, 40, 64 and 63 helped Doherty to make sure of his place in the last 16 phase.

O'Brien went down 5-3 to Glaswegian Stephen Maguire in a repeat of this season's Northern Ireland Trophy final.

O'Brien had breaks of 86, 70, 62 and 128, but former World Championship semi-finalist Maguire had breaks of 126 and 70 to progress.

Meanwhile, Graeme Dott's miserable season continued as the defending champion crashed out at the first hurdle.

The defending champion was hammered 5-1 by Englishman Barry Pinches at the Beijing Sports Gymnasium.

And with the defeat Dott has now failed to win his last 15 matches, the worst run of his professional career.

Nigel Bond impressed with a battling 5-3 victory over this season's SAGA Insurance Masters finalist Stephen Lee.

Breaks of 44, 56, 55 and 56 did the bulk of the damage, while Lee mustered two breaks of 52 as he slipped to defeat in just over three and a half hours.

There were also wins in the evening session for home favourite Ding Junhui and Barry Hawkins, who defeated seven-tie world champion Stephen Hendry.

Another legend also went out when Mark King defeated Steve Davis and Ryan Day won the battle of the Welshmen when he saw off Matthew Stevens.
