Ken Doherty was knocked out of the Malta Cup tonight by rank outsider Tom Ford, who produced a top-drawer display to reach the first quarter-final of his career.

Ford, the world number 74, constructed breaks of 90, 71, 59 and 51 to send the experienced Dubliner packing.

“It's easily the best win of my career,” said Ford, who faces Stephen Hendry for a place in the semi-finals.

“I knew it would be tough because Ken is one of the best tactical players in the world. I'm surprised I didn't feel the pressure like I thought I would. I seemed to clear the table every chance I got.”

Doherty, who won the Malta Grand Prix in 2000, admitted he had been outplayed by his unknown opponent.

“I'd never seen him before but he played very well,” he said. “He potted some great balls and whatever he went for seemed to go in."
