Wilson wins World Under-21 crown

Newcastle’s Gary Wilson recorded a 142 break on his way to a 11-5 victory in the IBSF World Under-21 Championship at the Ivy Rooms, Carlow on Thursday.

The 18-year-old has twice been English under-18 champion but this is the most significant title of his career.

Wilson follows the path taken by such luminaries as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Peter Ebdon and Ken Doherty and will make his debut on the main circuit next season.

He held a narrow 5-4 lead at the end of the first session, but surged ahead after the break winning five frames on the trot, his 142 in the penultimate frame equalling the high break set by Pramual Janthad.
