Ireland's world number six Ken Doherty crashed out of the British Open in Brighton today, beaten 5-2 by Kent-based Northern Irishman Gerard Greene.
Greene barely missed a ball as he fired in breaks of 85, 69, 74 and 78 to lead 4-1 before clinching victory two frames later by potting a tricky red down a side cushion to set up a third round meeting with Steve Davis or Joe Swail.
Doherty won his two frames with a pair of centuries - 127 and 130 – but admitted he was outplayed. "Gerard never missed a ball. He played really, really well," he said.
The Dubliner added: "I missed a couple of blacks in the second and third frames. But it's very rare you will go 4-1 down without another chance unless you are playing one of the very top players. I'm disappointed to lose but I can't have too many complaints."
