Mark Williams won the LG Cup tonight after overcoming Scotland's John Higgins, who scored a maximum 147 break, in an excellent final in Preston. Already holder of the World, UK and Masters trophies, the Welsh left-hander completed a clean sweep of BBC TV's televised tournaments.
Higgins' maximum, the third of his career, came in the 11th frame of his match against the Welshman - and earned him £25,000. It contained an outrageous fluke on the 12th black, after which he kept his nerve to reduce the arrears to 6-5 in the best-of-17-frame match.
That was to be his last frame however as Williams hit back with a 78 break before wrapping up the final two frames following mistakes by Higgins.
