Doherty to face Higgins in quarter-final

Ken Doherty will face John Higgins in his Powerhouse UK Championship quarter-final tomorrow after the Scotsman ended Steve Davis' dream of a seventh UK title in York tonight.

Higgins turned a 5-3 overnight advantage into a 9-7 success, but Davis gave a great account of himself and with a touch of luck could have got even closer to the 1998 and 2000 UK title winner. Davis never managed to get on level terms and Higgins eventually killed off his 45-year-old rival's brave resistance to set up a match with Dubliner Doherty, who last night ousted pin-up and local favourtie Paul Hunter.

Ronnie O'Sullivan defeated Hong Kong's Marco Fu 9-7 and now plays Drew Henry in the last eight. Peter Ebdon avenged last month's British Open defeat by Alan McManus when he easily defeated the Scot 9-2 to set up a match with surprise quarter-finalist Robert Milkins. 1999 UK champion Mark Williams also eased past his opponent, comprehensively beating Chris Small 9-3. The Welshman’s next encounter should prove a lot more difficult when he faces Stephen Hendry.
