Doherty through to quarter-finals in York

Ireland's Ken Doherty is through to the quarter-finals of the Powerhouse UK Championship in York after a 9-4 victory over snooker's pin-up and local favourite Paul Hunter.

The Dubliner, who now awaits the winner of the Steve Davis/John Higgins encounter, is delighted to still have a chance to make amends for last season's 10-1 final defeat by Ronnie O'Sullivan. "...This was a good result because I'm sure Paul was favourite for this match," Doherty said.

Meanwhile, Stephen Hendry also advanced to the last eight when he dumped out fellow Scot Graeme Dott on a scoreline of 9 frames to 6. Hendry will next face either Mark Williams or Chris Small.

Robert Milkins, who defeated Matthew Stevens 9-8 today, will play either Alan McManus or Peter Ebdon. If defending champion O'Sullivan can beat Marco Fu, he will play Drew Henry, who edged out Stephen Lee 9-8 in another thriller today.
