McManus beats Davis to reach LG final

Alan McManus halted the Steve Davis bandwagon to reach the final of the LG Cup at Preston Guild Hall on Saturday night. Former World Champion Davis, had been looking to advance to his 99th major professional final having eliminated Jimmy White, Mark Williams and Paul Hunter this week.

But McManus won a match heavily dominated by safety play 6-4 to set up a final day showdown with his fellow Scot Chris Small. The contest lasted almost five hours and included a frame that had to be restarted twice because it became so bogged down by tactical play.

At one point, a drunken spectator had to be ejected because his snoring was clearly audible in the arena. McManus won three frames on the pink and from 3-3 made breaks of 78, 50 and 76 to finally clinch victory. The world number 15 from Glasgow is now through to his 15th major final and is looking to win his 15th title.
