Doherty edged out by resilient Hendry

Ken Doherty has been knocked out of the Embassy World Championships following this afternoon's dramatic conclusion to what was an absorbing marathon quarter-final with Scotland's Stephen Hendry. In a tense and gripping finale to one of the most amazing contests in Crucible history, Hendry exacted revenge for his 1997 final defeat at this very venue with a 13 –12 victory over the Dubliner.

Hendry opened this afternoon's session with breaks of 132 and 134 to open up a two frame lead at 10-8, but Doherty replied with a century of his own as the match then went to 12-12. However, the Scot secured his place in the last four with a stunning break of 91 in the decider that owed as much to his ability to seize a half chance as his composure under pressure.

The 33-year-old set the ball rolling with an adventurous pot on the black and followed up with a series of pots from difficult positions to keep his hopes of an eighth world title alive. He will meet either Ronnie O'Sullivan or Stephen Lee in the semi-final.
