Ebdon reaches last eight in York

Seventh seed Peter Ebdon withstood a brave fightback from Tony Drago to win 9-7 to reach the quarter finals of the UK Championship in York last night. Ebdon was firmly in control of the tie, leading 8-4, when the ‘Maltese Falcon’ stormed back into contention by rattling off the next three frames. Ebdon, however, ended the fightback by clinching the one frame he needed for victory and a place in the last eight.

“Tony played very well. He’s a tremendous entertainer, a fantastic ambassador for snooker and an absolute credit to the game,” said Ebdon. “Tony made it very tough for me – he probably deserved to win because I didn’t play well.” Ebdon will now play Ronnie O’Sullivan in Thursday’s quarter-final.

In another last 16 tie, Ireland's Ken Doherty leads Wales' Dominic Dale 6-2 after the opening session. The match will resume this evening.
