Jimmy ‘The Whirlwind’ White was blown away by Drew Henry, in the latest round of matches in the LG Cup at Preston. Ken Doherty also suffered a bad loss going down to Marco Fu with only minimal resistance.
Doherty has not been able to rediscover his form this season and looked out of sorts against his young opponent. Fu, from Hong Kong, never looked in much danger, although the Irishman showed glimpses of the play that won him a World title, recording a break of 104. But Doherty was only able to take two frames off Fu, who won 5-2, and secured himself a place in the last 16.
In the other match, Drew Henry took the first frame, after some sloppy safety play from White let his opponent in. The ‘Whirlwind’ showed some of his old form in the second frame, making a winning break of 88 to give himself some hope. But Henry raced through the next three frames, to give himself an imposing 4-1 lead in the match.
White battled back, and took the next two frames, to give his fans in Preston some hope that he could turn around a disappointing start to the season. But Henry held his nerve against his popular opponent and secured victory in the eighth frame of the match. This loss means White is still without a win this season, while Henry goes on to face World Champion ‘Rocket’ Ronnie O’Sullivan in the next round.
