Mark Williams made it three Champions Cup semi-final appearances in a row today when he beat Paul Hunter 5-2 in his final match of the group stages but it was not an impressive display from the world number one, who made top break of just 43 in the tie. Hunter won the first frame but Williams then captured four-in-a-row before Hunter reduced the deficit in frame six. However, he was only delaying the inevitable and Williams took a scrappy seventh frame to secure his victory.
However, Williams does not know yet who he will meet in the semi-finals as it all depends on the outcome of tonight's final Group B match between John Higgins and Stephen Hendry. At present, Williams tops his group, which would pit him against Group A runner-up Peter Ebdon. However, if Higgins triumphs over Hendry, who has failed to win a match so far in the tournament, he will top the group and Williams will have to take on Group A winner, Ken Doherty, instead.
