Ken Doherty finished on top of Group A in the Champions Cup at Brighton tonight after a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Jimmy White. The Dubliner has won all three of his games so far in the competition but it has been a tournament to forget for White who was left to pick up the wooden spoon after this latest defeat. White also finished bottom of his group in the same event 12 months ago.
However, with Doherty guaranteed his semi-final spot and White sure of going no where expect home after this match, it was no surprise that the Irishman enjoyed such an easy win that lasted just over an hour.
"To beat Jimmy at any stage is a feather in my cap. He has always been a player I've admired," said Doherty afterwards. He now meets either Mark Williams or John Higgins in the semi-finals depending on the result from tomorrow's Group B ties. At the moment, he looks likely to meet Mark Williams who currently lies in second spot in that group.
