Former world champion Stephen Hendry has suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Brian Morgan in the second round of the Grand Prix at Telford. Hendry has not won a tournament now for over a year but he didn't look in danger in the early stages of yesterday's tie as he took a 2-0 lead against the Englishman. However, it then fell apart for the Scot as Morgan fought back. Ranked 28 in the world, Morgan stole the third frame from Hendry after the Scot failed to pot the yellow. After that, Hendry continued to make silly mistakes and gifted Morgan five consecutive frames to take the match and progress to the next round.
Afterwards, Hendry was very disappointed with his performance. "I was poor, simple as that," he said. He is not even looking forward to playing in his native country at the Regal Masters in Motherwell next week. "It's all very well saying I'll be coming out with all guns blazing up there but if I keep playing like this it'll be another defeat," he added. Morgan, unsurprisingly, was thrilled with how he played. "I always seem to play my best against the top players, but towards the end I was very nervous," he said. He will now take on Peter Ebdon in the third round.
