Snooker: O'Brien and Swail into second round - O'Sullivan

Dubliner Fergal O'Brien is into the second round of the World Snooker Championship following a 10-8 victory over Chris Small. Joe Swail beat Paul Hunter 10-6, and recorded a break of 141 in the process. Mark Williams, who will be the new world number 1 when the new rankings are published next week, beat John Read 10-4, with Ronnie O'Sullivan and Peter Ebdon both losing.

Ronnie O'Sullivan became the second star name to crash out of the Championships today after a dramatic defeat by 200-1 outsider David Gray. The fourth seed made five century breaks - a record for a first-round match at the Crucible - but could never shake off his opponent and lost a nail-biting deciding frame against the 21-year-old qualifier from Surrey. O'Sullivan follows seven-time champion Stephen Hendry out of the tournament - the Scot going down 10-7 to Stuart Bingham on Saturday.

Ken Doherty has started well in his bid to recapture his 1997 crown - he currently leads Darren Morgan of Wales by six frames to three, and that match will resume tomorrow morning at 10am.
