Michael Lowry will win his first international cap as one of six changes made to the Ireland team to face Italy on Sunday (3pm).

The Ulster full-back gets the nod ahead of regular starter Hugo Keenan for Ireland's third game of the Guinness Six Nations.

Dan Sheehan and Ryan Baird earn their first championship starts, while Robbie Henshaw, James Lowe and Peter O'Mahony all come into Andy Farrell's side, who were beaten by France last time out.

It means that there is no starting place for Johnny Sexton who is named on the bench, with O’Mahony taking over the captaincy duties.

Sexton missed the game in Paris due to a hamstring injury.

Lock James Ryan misses out with an adductor issue.

Mack Hansen moves to the left wing with Lowe returning from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the opening two rounds.

Henshaw also earns a first start having featured off the bench in Paris, while Joey Carbery retains the 10 jersey, alongside Jamison Gibson-Park.

With Rónan Kelleher ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury, Sheehan earns his fifth cap at hooker with the experience of Tadhg Furlong and Andrew Porter alongside.

Tadhg Beirne is named in the second row with Baird for company, with O'Mahony, Josh van der Flier and Caelan Doris, switching to 8, forming the rest of the back row.

Rob Herring, Dave Kilcoyne, Finlay Bealham, Kieran Treadwell and Jack Conan are the forward replacements, while Craig Casey, Sexton and James Hume cover the backs.

There is no place for Conor Murray in the match-day squad.

Italy, on the back of 34 consecutive championship defeats, have made three changes to their line-up.

There's a Six Nations debut for Zebre’s Pierre Bruno on the right wing, while centre Leonardo Marin of Benetton has been handed his first tournament start, with club-mate Giovanni Pettinelli coming in at blindside flanker.

Treviso pair Marco Zanon and Braam Steyn start on the bench with Bordeaux winger Federico Mori out of the 23.

Head coach Kieran Crowley, whose side lost to France and England in the opening rounds, said: "We have prepared the next meeting by focusing on the aspects of the game that did not satisfy us in the first two games.

"We face the next commitment with energy and the desire to improve. It will be a physically tough match against one of the strongest teams in the world."
