Shane Horgan expects more from 'conservative' Ireland

Shane Horgan wants to see more adventure in Ireland's play when they take on Italy in the Six Nations at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Ireland have scored just two tries in their three games so far - a draw with Wales and defeats to France and England - and the former winger, who scored 21 tries in 65 Tests for Ireland, wants to see Joe Schmidt's side take more risks against the Italians.

"We haven't played a very open game, we've been quite conservative," he told RTÉ Sport. "We haven't been performing very well in that regard.

"We're definitely going to win the game, it's really a case of how we perform. I'd like to see the game opened up a little bit, certainly in the opposition 22.

"It's something that we haven't been doing so far. We've been trying a lot of stuff a bit deeper, in our own territory, and there have been positives from that, but I'd like to see things changed up a bit in the opposition 22."

Joe Schmidt has resisted the temptation to retain the services of Stuart McCloskey, who impressed on his debut against England, in midfield and replaces the youngster with Ulster team-mate Jared Payne, with Simon Zebo replacing hamstring injury victim Rob Kearney at full-back.

"It's definitely a conservative selection," said Horgan. "McCloskey was a revelation last week. He's a young guy, himself and (Robbie) Henshaw are probably the way Ireland are going to go in the future.

"He could have gone with Payne at full-back, instead he's gone for Zebo.

"It's quite a conservative selection but that's what we've seen from Joe for the last couple of years.

"I think we would have liked to have seen it mixed up a little bit but more important than the selection is the way Ireland play at the weekend."

Horgan also tipped England to come out on top of what is effectively the championship decider (4pm, live on RTÉ2) at Twickenham on Saturday.

"England have been the most improved team of the Six Nations," he said.

"Wales have been quite conservative in their approach. We've heard a lot about that 'Warrenball' direct running technique that they use, which is a very attritional type of rugby.

"I think we're going to see more of that but based on what we've seen in the first few weeks it looks as if England have a little bit more to offer and I expect them to come out on top on Saturday."
