Paul Griffen will play at scrumhalf for beleaguered Italy when they face Ireland in the Six Nations Championship on Sunday.
The New Zealand-born 33-year-old, who last played for Italy in the 2007 World Cup against Portugal, was named in the side on Thursday in place of flanker Mauro Bergamasco, who struggled as an emergency halfback in Saturday's 36-11 defeat by England.
Italy coach Nick Mallett had previously overlooked Griffen but has brought him back because of injuries to three scrumhalves and the inexperience of Giulio Toniolatti, who replaced Bergamasco at halftime at Twickenham.
Bergamasco reverts to flanker in place of Josh Sole.

Luke McLean starts at flyhalf with usual number 10 Andrea Marcato ruled out with a head injury sustained against England.
Lock Marco Bortolami also hurt a knee in the defeat so Tommaso Reato comes into the side.
In other changes, Mirco Bergamasco, brother of Mauro, returns to centre having started on the wing on Saturday so Gonzalo Garcia drops to the bench and winger Matteo Pratichetti comes in.
