Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove secured their spot in the gold fleet racing at the 49er World Championships.

Racing on day three was heavily affected by strengthening winds with the men's skiff fleets managing just one race while the women’s skiff fleets completed four races after an earlier start.

Battling through the demanding conditions, north Dublin sailors Robert Dickson (Howth Yacht Club) and Sean Waddilove (Skerries Sailing) delivered an impressive fourth-place finish in their only race of the day. The result confirmed their place in gold fleet for the upcoming elimination series and leaves the Irish crew sitting 20th overall.

With the fleet now reset for the next stage of the championship, the Irish sailors will turn their focus to the higher-intensity racing of the elimination series, where consistency across the remaining qualifying races will be crucial in the push towards Sunday’s Final Series.

The Women’s Skiff pairing of Erin McIlwaine (Royal St George YC / Newcastle YC) and Ellen Barbour (County Antrim Boat Club) endured a dramatic day on the water following the cancellation of racing yesterday. With organisers under pressure to complete the schedule four races were sailed in challenging conditions.

The day began with a strong fifth-place finish but the challenging conditions made consistency difficult as racing progressed. McIlwaine and Barbour nevertheless continued to seize opportunities throughout the day, showing impressive adaptability while competing in winds of up to 25 knots. Eventually finishing in 35th and missing out on gold fleet.

Coach Matt McGovern reflected on the day’s racing: "The conditions out there today made it a real test of survival and boat handling at times. The girls showed great determination throughout the day and despite making life a little difficult for themselves with a few starts, they fought back well in each race. Considering the stage they are currently at and the conditions they were facing, it was a very encouraging performance and an important step forward for them."

Racing continues tomorrow into the elimination series, with two further days of racing scheduled before Sunday’s final series on 17 May, where the world’s top crews will battle it out for podium positions.
