Ireland's Eve McMahon holds the overall lead in the ILCA 6 dinghy event in Mallorca after day three of the Princess Sofia Trophy Sailing Grand Slam series.

The Howth sailor, who represented Ireland at the Paris Olympics, sported the leader's yellow bib this morning at the top of her 143-boat event.

But while her Gold fleet expected windy conditions for the whole day, the strong breeze died away at the end of the first race leaving organisers struggling to set a new race.

McMahon placed sixth in that race but had been as high as fourth until an umpire decided she had made an illegal move and she had to make two turns of her boat as a penalty.

The manoeuvre cost her the three places but her result was still enough to retain the bib overnight as no more races were sailed for the day.

Her older brother Ewan had a shaky opening in the men's race, race where he placed 29th, which dropped him five places to 17th overall.

A second race for the day got under way and McMahon shot off the line and took an early lead. By the first turning mark, he was on track to build a comfortable advantage and a race win was likely.

However, the wind died, so the race was abandoned and nothing further was possible for either men's or women's events for the day.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed that world number three Finn Lynch has formally withdrawn from this event following an illness that is running rampant among many of the sailors staying at a particular hotel on the Bay of Palma.
