Ben O'Shaughnessy and Ethan Spain outshone double Olympians Rob Dickson and Sean Waddilove on the second day of competition in the 49er class at the World Championships in Cagliari to move up to 33rd overall.
O'Shaughnessy and Spain recorded a second place, a race win and a 12th place to gives themselves an outside chance of making the Gold fleet series in their first senior Worlds.
However, double Olympians Dickson and Waddilove endured a testing day as they dropped to 41st overall in a 49er class led by Poland's Mikolaj Staniul with Kuba Sztorch.
In the opening race on day two, Dickson and Waddilove were in second place at the first mark rounding but then chose the wrong side of the course and dropped to 14th place by the finish.
They managed an eighth in the next race but a 22nd place finish in the final race of the day leaves them with a mountain to climb to make the Gold fleet series that starts on Friday.
