Double Olympic veterans Rob Dickson and Sean Waddilove laid down a clear marker of intent today in Sardinia when they won the opening race of the 49er World Championships, the men's skiff event for LA2028.

The Dublin pair staged a gutsy starting manoeuvre when they ducked behind the other 26 boats and shot out past the fleet on the second of the starting signal.

They led the race on the first lap and they extended their lead to score an emphatic first place.

However, their euphoria was short-lived as the next two races saw the winds become tricky leaving Dickson and Waddilove struggling to spot the conditions against the intensity of the setting sun.

Two near last place finishes followed, though one of these can be dropped as their worst result from tomorrow, and there are still another 12 races remaining before the title is decided on Sunday.
