After two days of racing on the Bay of Palma, Irish crews have qualified for the Gold fleet round of competition in the Princess Sofia Trophy, the first major event in the lead-up to the Los Angeles Olympics.

Carlow sailor Finn Lynch mastered the second day with two second places in his men's one-person dinghy.

The day’s result propelled him into third place overall of his 174-boat event.

He is joined in the Gold fleet series by Howth’s Ewan McMahon who also had a good day with two top ten results and he now lies 12th place overnight.

McMahon’s Olympian sister Eve nailed her second day performance with a race win that she was determined to deliver to make up for mid-fleet results on Monday in her women’s one-person dinghy event.

Meanwhile, in the men’s skiff discipline, after their race win on Monday, double Olympic veterans Rob Dickson and Sean Waddilove with two top tens placing them 13th overnight.

The Gold fleet series for each discipline comprises the best crews from each that compete over the coming three days to decide the top ten of each event. These crews sail a short medal race final on Saturday to decide the podium outcomes.
