Sailor Finn Lynch is eyeing a medal race spot after strong finishes in the men's dinghy event on Sunday.

The Carlow man placed 13th in this morning's race 7, followed by an 11th-place finish in race 8.

His performances leave him ranked 10th with a total of 99 net points, two points shy of Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini representing Italy.

Matt Wearn is in first overall, with the Australian on 38 points. Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus on 52 points and Peru's Stefano Peschiera on 62 points are his nearest pursuers.

With two races remaining, Lynch will need to maintain his ranking and place in the top 10 to qualify for the medal race, which is scheduled for Tuesday.

A silver medallist at the World Youth Championships in 2012, he became the World Under-19 champion in 2014 and qualified for Rio in 2016. However, he failed to qualify for the Tokyo Games.

Lynch hopes to continue his current form as in January 2024 he finished ninth at the World Championships.

The 2024 European bronze medalist will compete for a spot in the medal race tomorrow afternoon with races 9 and 10 scheduled for 1.40pm and 2.45pm respectively.

In the women's event, Eve McMahon is 14th overall on 101 net points. McMahon impressed in race 7 with a sixth-place finish and came home in 15th in race 8 later in the day.

Just as in the men's race, the leaderboard features a dominant leader, with Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands the star performer on 19 points. Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom on 47 points and Maud Jayet of Switzerland on 59 points currently fill the minor podium places.
