Irish 49er pair Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove have won silver at the Hempel World Cup Allianz Regatta in the Netherlands on Saturday.

The Dutch team of Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken grabbed gold, edging out the Irishmen by just one point.

Lambriex and Van de Werken have been training partners to Waddilove and Dickson.

Last summer Waddilove and Dickson were disqualified from Races 5 and 6 in the 49er class at the Tokyo Games as a result of the trapeze harness worn by the crew weighing more than the required 2kg.

They had been seventh overall with six events remaining in qualifying. The disqualification from the two races saw them drop from seventh to 13th overall, ruining their chances of making the medal race.

However they had much better day at the office in Almere as their hard work earned a medal.

"It's been a great week here in quite tricky conditions - light and shifty - something that the boys have tried to work on, so it's fantastic that they’ve put in some of the best days against the whole fleet throughout the week," said Matt McGovern, Irish Sailing 49er coach.

"It’s been a great week, and finishing off in true style today was definitely a high point. It’s always nice to win a medal race, especially in such great conditions."
