Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove displayed a coolness beyond their years to win the Under-23 49er Sailing World Championships title in style today.
The duo had been the contesting the medal positions throughout the five-day event and were overnight leaders going into the closing events.
In an incredibly tight finish to the regatta, they did not get off to the perfect start when in race 10 of the series they had gear failure and just managed to scrape home in ninth.
They regrouped for the next race knowing it would be the last of the series.
Dickson and Waddilove worked the right side of the course and won the race in style. It was their second win of the series in the 52-boat fleet.
Marseilles is the venue for sailing in the 2024 Olympics.
The win caps off a fantastic summer for Irish Sailing’s next generation of Olympic sailors. In July Liam Glynn claimed a bronze medal in the Under-21 Laser World Championships.
