Ryder Cup fans defy inclement weather

The forecast of more bad weather failed to discourage thousands of spectators from arriving at the K Club for the final day of practice for the Ryder Cup.

Winds gusting to more than 40mph saw fans initially prevented from travelling to and entering the course amid fears for their safety yesterday, with several trees brought down around the Palmer Course.

Heavy rain also meant one of the two park and ride schemes in operation was moved from Palmerstown House to Punchestown Racecourse due to the risk of vehicles getting stuck –
adding an extra 30 minutes to the journey time.

However, an estimated 45,000 fans were again expected to attend practice and the opening ceremony - scheduled for 3.30pm - which could be held indoors if the forecast rain and gale-force winds arrive.

Both teams began their practise before midday with the Europeans starting at the first tee and the Americans at the 10th.

Captains Ian Woosnam and Tom Lehman will hand in their pairings for the opening fourball matches this afternoon, with the games scheduled to start at 8am on Friday.
