Colin Montgomerie has told European captain Sam Torrance not to lose any sleep over the form of his team ahead of next month's Ryder Cup. The postponement of the contest for a year in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11 means several players, on both sides, are out of form.
Lee Westwood is down to 107th in the world rankings, Paul McGinley has four missed cuts in his last five events, while veteran Bernhard Langer has a best finish of joint 24th to his credit in Europe this season. But Montgomerie feels it is too early for Torrance to be concerned, with the contest at The Belfry still seven weeks away.
"Form changes and there is just under two months to go," Montgomerie admitted ahead of his first round in the Scandinavian Masters in Stockholm today. He added: "There are some players playing well and others that aren't and hopefully by seven weeks everyone is performing to a level where we can interact quite well together. If Sam is worried I would tell him not to be because seven weeks is a long time in this game."
