Ulster's walking wounded face high-pressure run-in

The United Rugby Championship is continuously providing surprises heading into the final two rounds of the regular season.

Benetton pulled off a shock victory against Leinster, who had reinstated some of their front-line players heading into the Champions Cup semi-final this weekend.

Leinster held back their players in previous seasons, but took a different approach this time around.

Benetton had different plans after a very poor performance against Munster last week. The Italians stood their ground this time, deciding to write their own script instead of being part of the Leinster narrative.

It was also a step too far for Connacht to beat the Lions in Johannesburg last weekend.

It was predicted that Connacht would struggle to maintain that level of performance against South African opposition in such a short space of time. Their monumental victory against the Stormers, after beating the Sharks in the previous URC round, meant that they had already over-achieved in some ways on their trip to the southern hemisphere.

That will sharpen their focus as they welcome Munster in two weeks for the penultimate game of the regular league season. Stuart Lancaster will need to brush off that defeat to change the narrative quickly for his players and stay in the fight for the play-off positions.

The intangible psychological side of sport is fascinating.

Munster are no longer desperate for a win at the Dexcom after two bonus-point victories put them in a much healthier spot in the league.

For a club apparently in crisis, they're now just two points behind Leinster on the league table. That might be a poor reflection of Leinster as much as it is a reminder that Clayton McMillan's side can get their act together pretty quickly, and any crisis within Munster can be turned into a cohesive and unifying moment.

They’re not quite secure in a play-off spot just yet. Travelling to Galway has been difficult for them, but even a Connacht win won’t see the two provinces trade places. Munster know that a home win against the Lions would see them into the play-off positions and with Champions Cup rugby secured.

That won’t be their mentality, but sport has a funny way of balancing out the pressure that’s put on teams. That pressure produces performances, and the challenge for Munster is for them to be as desperate in Galway as they were in their previous two bonus-point wins. They should now comfortably make it into a play-off spot, not that their mindset will reflect that.

To make matters better for them, teams within the play-off spots must still face off against each other. Cardiff face a hugely difficult run-in, as do Ulster, whose momentum is coming crashing down with their injury list not helping matters. Not to mention that while other teams are resting, they’ll face Exeter in a Challenge Cup semi-final, which may well be a safer way into Champions Cup rugby for next year.

Both Dragons and Ulster are still left in the Challenge Cup. Should the Dragons win the competition outright, only the top seven spaces in the United Rugby Championship would make it into Champions Cup rugby in the 2026/27 season because the Challenge Cup winners get an automatic spot, despite their league position.

Ulster could also secure their place by beating Exeter in the Challenge Cup semi-final and then beating the winners of Montpellier and the Dragons, all of which they are perfectly capable of doing.

Ulster will face both Glasgow and the Stormers in the final two United Rugby Championship games. They’ll be hoping that both teams will have an eye on the play-offs, but we know that momentum in sport is not to be messed with and both teams will need to keep their rhythm as they head into the business end of the season.

Cardiff, who sit in sixth place, must also host the Stormers. These games are tricky to predict because of the travel and psychology when teams are already qualified. Whatever happens, one of the teams above Ulster on the table will have to drop points.

Ulster’s injury list isn’t getting any shorter in a condensed finish to the season.

While their walking wounded are adding another week to their season by competing in the Challenge Cup, their inter-provincial counterparts will be managing their load throughout a weekend off, readying themselves for battle on the following week.

Defeat for Peter Dooley and Connacht in South Africa, but a positive trip for the province

Despite their fight in the opening quarter against Munster, Ulster were never going to mount a sustained challenge.

They didn’t have the quality on the pitch to keep their performance to a standard that would have pushed Munster the whole way. Motivation and emotion can put a team into any contest, however, quality will shine through and Ulster just didn’t have enough of it on show to come away from Thomond Park with meaningful points on the board.

A lot can change in the remaining two fixtures of the United Rugby Championship. Ulster are still the team under the most pressure, considering their squad health and the fact that they’re battling on two fronts.

A win next week would change the narrative. However, it could be a very long and anxious finish to the season for a team like Ulster.

Despite competing in two different competitions at the end of the season, they could find it very difficult unless they get some players off the injury list.
