Former Leinster prop Ed Byrne has rejoined the province on a short-term loan move from Cardiff.

The 32-year-old former Ireland international has been recruited to help ease the province's front row injury crisis after Alex Usanov become the latest loosehead to be ruled out of action.

Usanov was injured just four minutes into last Saturday's Investec Champions Cup quarter-final win against Sale Sharks, joining Andrew Porter, Jack Boyle and Paddy McCarthy on the injury list.

It left Jerry Cahir, who was recruited from AIL side Lansdowne earlier this season, as the only fully fit loosehead in the senior squad, ahead of Friday's visit to Ulster in the URC.

Byrne could go straight into the matchday squad this week, with Usanov, Boyle and McCarthy all confirmed to be ruled out, although Porter could be fit to play if he is able to overcome a minor shoulder issue.

Byrne (below) came through the Leinster Academy and made 102 appearances for the club before his move to Cardiff at the start of last season.

Head coach, Leo Cullen commented: "We're delighted to have Ed back in blue for the remainder of this season.

"Not only is Ed a great character but he also knows our system inside out, brings valuable experience, and will be a timely boost to our front-row options during what is a very busy and competitive stage of the season.

"We're very grateful to Cardiff Rugby for their understanding and cooperation in facilitating this move."

Byrne's return to Leinster comes as the province announced that Ireland international winger Tommy O'Brien has signed a new contract with the club.

Lock Brian Deeny has also agreed a new deal, while hooker Stephen Smyth has signed his first senior contract with the URC champions.
