Saracens have issued a statement claiming reports linking Ireland boss Andy Farrell with a return to the English club are "disrespectful" to the head coach and the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).

Farrell is contracted with the union until the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

The Englishman joined the Ireland set-up in 2016 and became head coach when Joe Schmidt stepped down at the end of 2019.

Recent reports linked Farrell with a return to the London club where his son Owen has played since 2008 when his contract with Ireland expires.

Speaking before the Six Nations, Farrell told the Irish Independent: "I'm contracted till after the World Cup, that’s 21 months or whatever.

"It’s a long time. I love doing what I do. It’s not just me with decisions like that. But for now, the only thing on my mind is doing as good a job as I possibly can."

Last month former Ireland international Mark McCall announced he is to step away from the director of rugby role at Saracens that he has held since 2011.

Former Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter will return to the three-time European champions at the end of the season in the same role.

Those changes increased speculation that Farrell could make a return to the club where he played and coached between 2005 and 2012 after making the switch from rugby league.

Responding to multiple reports that a deal between the parties was close, Saracens issued a statement on Thursday evening.

"Saracens would like to address recent media speculation linking Andy Farrell with a coaching role at the club," read the statement.

"Andy has not discussed his future with anyone on the board or ownership group of Saracens and we can categorically state, despite numerous reports to the contrary in the press, that no offer has been made to Andy.

"Andy has long-standing and deep personal ties to Saracens.

"He represented the club as a player between 2005 and 2009 and remains closely affiliated with the club through his family, as the father of Owen Farrell, one of the most significant players in Saracens’ history and a current member of the squad.

"The misguided reporting is disrespectful to Brendan Venter who will be assuming the DOR responsibilities from Mark McCall at the end of the 25/26 season. It is also disrespectful to Andy and the IRFU.

"Given Andy’s close relationship with Saracens, the club looks forward to welcoming him to more home fixtures once the Six Nations Championship has concluded."

The IRFU had no statement to make when contacted by RTÉ Sport.
