Springboks claim unfair treatment over red card calls ahead of Ireland match

South Africa are hoping to have both Franco Mostert and Lood de Jager available to face Ireland on Saturday with both locks facing disciplinary action.

Mostert received a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Italy's Paolo Garbisi by referee James Doleman during the Springboks 32-14 victory over Italy on Saturday.

De Jager has already been hit with a four-match ban after he was red-carded in the previous week's match against France for a high tackle on Thomas Ramos.

On both occasions the second rows were adjudged to have committed acts deemed worthy of a full red card and the bunker review was not used.

Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon in Dublin, assistant coach Mzwandile Stick confirmed that they have appealed De Jager's sanction and Mostert faces the mandatory World Rugby disciplinary hearing.

"I think he's going to have a hearing tomorrow or Wednesday and also Lood de Jager is going through another appeal but yeah, as a team we are just disappointed with how things are flowing at the moment," Stick said.

"Every week we are losing players and it's sad.

"The build-up to the Italy game was good. If you look at the Italian side, how they played the previous week [beating Australia], and the spirit in Turin.

"Everyone was looking forward to the game and then for the game to turn the way it did was [disappointing].

"[Because] if you are saying that Franco Mostert is a red card probably over the weekend if you saw the incidents surely there was supposed to be more than five red cards.

"All of a sudden other situations become yellow card and we are just disappointed with the way things are being handled at the moment.

"If you look at the actions of Franco Mostert and Lood de Jager the previous week he has done everything by the book. His only mistake was just maybe the contact was here [chest] but it ended up in the head. I don't understand how does that become permanent red card.

"From our side as coaches, we still have to work hard because we're working with these guys.

"We can see that they’re nice and tall. They try to do everything by the book, but because rugby is a physical game, sometimes you don’t get it perfect.

"For them to say the tackle was 'never legal', it’s disappointing.

"Because of one tackle, like I said, that game could have been a very nice, beautiful game of rugby to watch. Italy, they deserve the respect.

"I felt they had everything in their powers to control the game. So for other people to get involved and I feel for the ref.

"Because we understood the communication that was happening between him and his team outside him.

"Probably about 21 decisions that were supposed to be made in the first half or probably the first 45 minutes, 20 of them went against us.

"Not because of the ref. Unfortunately he has to respect the comms from his team outside.

"Disappointed with it, but once again, I feel for Italy and I would like to apologise with how things turned out.

"Because they’ve got a good coaching staff and then their players were also up for the game, but for other things to happen like that, I don’t think they deserve what they’ve got in that game."

Asked if he felt his team were being treated unfairly, Stick referenced two players who received bans before the tour, both involving incidents against Irish provinces.

He lamented the red cards picked up by Springboks and Sharks back Makazole Mapimpi (above) for a dangerous tackle on Ulster's Mike Lowry in their URC meeting last month and Jan-Hendrik Wessels, who also missed the tour after being cited for a rule related to "grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals" of Connacht's Josh Murphy.

The Bulls hooker was originally handed a nine-match ban that was subsequently reduced by one week.

"I’m not too sure, I’m not too sure," said the 41-year-old, who has been with the South Africa team since 2016.

"I don’t want to say things and then end up also being banned like Rassie [Erasmus, head coach] in the past.

"If you look at the past four red cards with our players.

"We had Makazole Mapimpi suspended, who is not on tour at the moment.

"The guy is on 47 test matches, missed out on a tour to make it to the 50th.

"Jan-Hendrik Wessels, a youngster, also missed out. Suspended.

"Lood de Jager, which I feel after this weekend and everything that I’ve seen, even the Fiji and the France game, the clean-outs that were there, the Ireland game against Australia, situations that were even worse than what those guys have been suspended for.

"Then for them they’re suspended, but other players will come back and play this week.

"Surely somewhere somehow, this is not fair.

"I don’t think we deserve this as a team.

"We’re doing everything in our powers to make sure that we send the right message when it comes to how we play the game.

"We’ve never talk bad about other teams.

"We always try and play in a good spirit, and hopefully things can just be between the four lines.

"Are we treated fairly? I don’t think so."
