South Africa's Jan-Hendrik Wessels to miss Ireland game due to lengthy ban after gruesome foul

Jan-Hendrik Wessels has received a nine-match suspension after the Bulls player was cited for a rule relating to "grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals" of Connacht's Josh Murphy, who has had his own red card following an angry reaction to the incident rescinded.

Wessels was found to have breached Law 9.27 in the United Rugby Championship clash against the Westerners last Friday.

The entire law states that a player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship, which includes grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals.

The panel overseeing the disciplinary process were satisfied that an act of foul play had occurred and found the incident met the red card threshold, with entry of low-end warranting a 12-week suspension.

They reduced the suspension by three weeks due to the player's good conduct prior to and at the hearing and good record which results in a nine-game suspension.

It means Wessels will miss South Africa's November internationals, including the clash with Ireland in Dublin on 22 November.

He will also miss URC and Champions Cup matches with the suspension ending after a game with Sharks on 20 December.

Wessels and the Bulls have the right to appeal.

Meanwhile, Wessels' compatriot Makazole Mapimpi has been banned for five matches for his lifting tackle on Ulster's Michael Lowry at the weekend.

Fortunately for the Springbok, the World Cup holders' four upcoming November internationals will count towards his suspension, despite the veteran only being named on the squad's standby list by head coach Rassie Erasmus.
