New Zealand lock Patrick Tuipulotu has been ruled out of the All Blacks' Autumn Nations Series campaign due to the shoulder injury that plagued him during the Rugby Championship.

The 32-year-old made three appearances during the recent championship, but a persistent shoulder issue has since deteriorated, and will require surgery.

The second row had been named in Scott Robertson's squad on Monday for the upcoming northern hemisphere tour, which begins against Ireland in Chicago on Saturday, 1 November.

Tuipulotu is expected to be sidelined for about six months and will likely miss the start of the Super Rugby season with the Auckland Blues.

His Blues team-mate Sam Darry replaces the 56-cap second row in the All Blacks squad, having been overlooked in the original group at the expense of Chiefs forward Josh Lord.

Tuipulotu is the third notable injury to hit this All Blacks squad, after fellow second row Tupou Vaa'i and tighthead prop Tyrel Lomax were earlier ruled out.

New Zealand face Ireland at Soldier Field in Chicago on 1 November, nine years on from the sides’ meeting at that stadium, where Ireland won 40-29 for their first ever win against the All Blacks.

New Zealand also face games Scotland, England and Wales to finish their season.
