Women's RWC wrap: Wins for New Zealand and South Africa

Champions New Zealand began the defence of their title with a 54-8 win over Spain at LNER Community Stadium in Women's Rugby World Cup Pool C.

The All Whites scored eight tries, including three in the first half to lead by 21-3 at the break.

Jorja Miller (2), Liana Mikaele-Tu'u, Ayesha Leti-I'iga (2), Georgia Ponsonby, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Theresa Setefano were the try scorers over the 80 minutes. Renee Holmes kicked seven conversions.

Ines Antolinez touched down with the final play of the game in a memorable moment for the Spanish, who are Ireland's next opponents.

However in a major blow to the holders, Kaipo Olsen-Baker was forced off with an injury to put the rest of her tournament in doubt.

New Zealand face Japan next and then meet Ireland in the final game of the pool.

Aseza Hele's hat-trick helped South Africa to a 10-try Pool D win over Brazil at Franklin's Gardens in Pool D.

Brazil are the first South American side to feature at the tournament and also the lowest ranked side in the competition at number 25 in the world.

Libbie Janse van Rensburg and flying winger Ayanda Malinga bagged two tries each in a 66-6 victory, with Nadine Roos, Aphiwe Ngwevu and Lerato Makua also crossing for scores. Byrhandre Dolf kicked eight conversions.

Brazil had to defend for much of the contest but managed a pair of penalties from Raquel Kochhann as South Africa claimed a first victory at the Women's Rugby World Cup since 2010.
