Ireland started their summer Test series with a comfortable, if scrappy, 34-5 win over Georgia in Tbilisi.

A largely second-string outfit, under interim coach Paul O'Connell, scored four tries and never looked in danger of a first ever loss to the Lelos.

Tommy O'Brien marked his debut with two well taken scores inside the opening eight minutes, while captain Craig Casey and Nick Timoney helped themselves to second-half tries.

Out-half Sam Prendergast was flawless off the tee, converting all four tries and adding two penalties.

There were also debuts for Darragh Murray, Michael Milne, Jack Aungier, Tom Ahern and Ben Murphy as Ireland made light of the absence of 16 players on Lions duty, seeing off a Georgia team who had their eye on an upset.

The visitors scored off their opening attack, with Jamie Osborne heavily involved in the build-up as Ireland worked their way into the Georgia 22.

Playing a penalty advantage, Prendergast clipped a kick back inside, with O'Brien timing his run perfectly to catch and score.

From a similar position a few minutes later the Leinster man added a second, this time finishing off in the corner from a sweeping Prendergast pass.

The conditions soon began to play their part, however, with both sides struggling in the spilling rain, leading to multiple breaks in play.

Aka Tabutsadze almost scored a superb try but lost the ball on the line, while Prendergast put a foot in touch down the other end before dotting down in the corner.

Ireland had another chance to increase their lead just before half-time but it was Richard Cockerill's side, 11th in the world rankings, that ended the period on the attack.

They declined to kick the ball dead after winning a defensive penalty and moments later following a series of Ireland infringements, Tornike Jalagonia powered over for a lineout maul try to leave the half-time score 14-5.

Calvin Nash, who had replaced the injured Jacob Stockdale just before the break, broke free at the start of the second half and combined with Ryan Baird, who offloaded to Casey for an early score.

Ireland maintained the upper hand and Prendergast kicked two penalties to make sure Ireland didn't have to sweat the final stages.

Ulster's Timoney scored the fourth try, powering past two defenders to finish off Prendergast's low cross kick, while Georgia couldn't take advantage of an extra man late on after Stuart McCloskey was sin-binned for not retreating.

Ireland are next in action against Portugal in Lisbon on Saturday.

O'Connell said afterwards: "It's a very important game, a lot of players away with the Lions.

"We've had a load of guys dying for an opportunity and you wonder how they will take that opportunity.

"I'm very happy with how they went about their business, they had a load of intent in what they did and they were really accurate with that intent."
