Former Connacht head coach Pete Wilkins will join Benetton Treviso as attack coach ahead of next season.

The Englishman, who spent eight years with the Westerners, the last two as head coach, parted ways with Connacht in April.

He missed the last four games of his reign, with the province stating he was on "sick leave".

"I am very happy and honoured to join Benetton and the wider Treviso rugby family," Wilkins said.

"This move represents an exciting new chapter, both for my family and for my coaching career.

"I am very grateful to Antonio Pavanello [general manager] and Calum MacRae [new head coach] for offering me this opportunity.

"I look forward to working closely with them, my new colleagues and the group of players to continue to grow Benetton Rugby and to develop the undoubted potential of this historic Italian club."

Pavanello said: "His international experience is broad and varied: he has worked at the highest level in very different rugby contexts, from Australia to Ireland, where he recently had a key role in the leadership of Connacht Rugby.

"Peter not only covered the role of attack coach under Andy Friend, he has also gained important experience as a head coach, an element that we consider very valuable to enrich the comparison and the quality of the work of our entire technical staff."

Benetton travel to Cork on Friday night to take on Munster in what could be a play-off for the URC play-offs between the seventh and eighth-placed teams.

The Italians are level on points with Munster thanks to a better winning record so a draw or a win will see them seal a place in the quarter-finals.

Ian Costello's side, who beat Connacht on Friday night, will guarantee a play-off place with a win.

However, Cardiff and Edinburgh can also sneak into the top-eight with a win the final round.

Connacht face Zebre in their final game with nothing on the line but pride.
