Caelan Doris has missed out on selection for the British and Irish Lions following shoulder surgery, with head coach Andy Farrell naming a 38-man squad for the tour of Australia this summer.

Doris suffered a shoulder injury during Leinster's Investec Champions Cup defeat to Northampton Saints on Saturday.

As expected, Farrell has included a healthy Irish contingent of 15 players, which is a record for Irish rugby. Sam Prendergast and Robbie Henshaw are among those who have missed the cut for the initial squad.

Twelve of the Irish selections come from Leinster, with hookers Dan Sheehan and Rónan Kelleher, props Andrew Porter and Tadhg Furlong, second rows Joe McCarthy and James Ryan, and back rows Jack Conan and Josh van der Flier included as forwards. Scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park, centre Garry Ringrose, wing James Lowe and full-back Hugo Keenan also make the cut.

Connacht pair Bundee Aki and Mack Hansen are also involved, with Canberra-native Hansen set to be available despite an ankle injury.

Tadhg Beirne is the only Munster player included, while Ulster have no representation on the tour.

Prendergast misses out on the out-half selection, with Finn Russell, Fin Smith and Marcus Smith the three tens picked by Farrell, who resisted the urge to include his son Owen on a fourth Lions tour.

England’s Maro Itoje has been named as tour captain, having previously been a Lion in 2017 and 2021. The Saracens lock is the first English captain since Martin Johnson in 2001, and one of 12 English players named.

Scotland have eight representatives in the squad, while flanker Jac Morgan and scrum-half Tomos Williams are the only Welsh players involved.

"Since we met as a coaching unit for the very first time six weeks ago we have been discussing more than 75 players of interest," Farrell said.

"But the key job is getting that squad balance right as we prepare for a long and demanding tour that finishes with a three-Test series against the Wallabies.

"I am very excited about working with this group and believe they have the capacity to achieve something special and add to the Lions legacy."

The Lions take on Argentina in a warm-up game at Aviva Stadium on Friday, 20 June, before departing on their nine-game tour of Australia.

Farrell’s side will take on the Wallabies in a three-Test series, the first of which is in Brisbane on 19 July, before Tests in Melbourne and Sydney on 26 July and 2 August respectively.
