Mack Hansen to come back 'just a little wiser', says Connacht boss Pete Wilkins

Pete Wilkins is confident Mack Hansen won't lose any of his personality after he completes his URC-mandated education session about how to conduct dealings with the media.

The Ireland and Connacht wing was handed a three-match ban for his comments made after Connacht's URC loss to Leinster in December.

The 26-year-old hit out at what he felt was on-going bias against his side, calling it "bull***t".

The United Rugby Championship handed down a three-game ban, which ends after Friday’s trip to Glasgow, although the Australia native is already away with the international team as they prepare for the Guinness Six Nations.

In addition to the playing ban, Hansen was told to undertake "an appropriate course (related to match officiating)... with the learnings to be disseminated with his team-mates at Connacht."

The province themselves were ordered to "run an education session with their players about how to conduct themselves in post-match media sessions and interactions with the media".

Speaking to RTÉ Sport on Monday morning, Wilkins, whose side qualified for the Challenge Cup last-16 as top seeds after Friday's win at Cardiff, confirmed the additional stipulations are still to be completed.

"It's a work in progress at this stage," he said.

"So the URC has sent through some suggestions, I suppose, as to what that education piece might look like.

"That's being handled by the club and obviously Mack's now away in camp so he won't be able to finish all of that immediately.

"There'll be bits of it that he can do whilst he's away and bits of it that that may have to pause till he gets back.

"They're still finalising exactly what that education piece looks like, and then we'll be able to put a plan in place when he can complete it."

Pete Wilkins is confident Mack

The Canberra-born back, who joined Connacht in 2021, is a firm fan favourite with his plain speaking and dislike of public relations jargon hailed by team-mates and coaches alike.

Wilkins smiled as he confirmed that 'Mack will still be Mack’ following his re-education.

"Oh, yeah, 100%, yeah. Just a little wiser, I'd say."

Connacht’s bonus-point victories over Zebre, Perpignan, Lyon and Cardiff means they will return to European action after the international window as top seeds.

They will host the Welsh side in the round of 16 in early April, and play any further knockout games in Galway.

Their performances in Europe have been at odds with their URC form, which has seen them pick up just three wins from nine to leave them in 13th place.

Connacht face defending champions Glasgow minus seven players called up by interim Ireland boss Simon Easterby, including Bundee Aki, Finlay Bealham, Cian Prendergast, Caolin Blade and development squad members Cathal Forde and Ben Murphy.

Wilkins is hoping to see some of the less experienced players step up this week and for the mid-Six Nations games against Cardiff and Benetton.

"It’s a good challenge for the rest of the group," he said.

"Bundee’s been such an important voice for us this season, but in particular over these last few weeks.

"There'll be a space there to fill, and we had a good chat about that with the players this morning.

"There'd be guys that need to step up, but they also need to step up in their own way.

"In terms of playing personnel, I'm pretty confident with the guys that we've got to slide in when the time comes.

"But, certainly, the voice, the leadership, obviously, Cian going away as club captain.

"There's other guys that get the opportunity, not just to play, but also to assert the personalities on the team and influence others, which is exciting."

Oisín Dowling has recovered from a calf issue and is available, while Denis Buckley is under review for a dead leg but has not been ruled out of Friday's game.
