Winger Makazole Mapimpi scored a hat-trick of tries as South Africa overwhelmed a gutsy but outgunned Portugal 64-21 despite being down a man for all but two minutes of Saturday's clash at the Free State Stadium.

The World Cup winners were stung early in their first test meeting against 15th-ranked Portugal when centre Andre Esterhuizen was sent off for an illegal head-high tackle in the second minute.

They were then caught out by a breakaway try for the visitors, brilliantly finished off by winger Jose Paiva dos Santos in the 11th minute.

But the top-ranked Springboks, who made 14 changes from the side that narrowly lost to Ireland in Durban last week, rallied from 0-7 down to dominate in a festival of running rugby in front of a capacity crowd.

South Africa, with seven debutants used in the match, outscored Portugal by 10 tries to three.

The All Blacks made it three wins out of three in the July international window with a 47-5 romp over Fiji in front of a crowd of 33,217 in San Diego, California.

New Zealand ran in seven tries through winger Caleb Clarke, scrum-half Cortez Ratima, centre Billy Proctor, loose forward Ardie Savea, winger Sevu Reece, prop Ethan de Groot and hooker George Bell.

Fly-half Damian McKenzie added 12 points from the kicking tee at Snapdragon Stadium to continue Scott Robertson's winning start as New Zealand coach after they swept a tough two-match home series against England.

The flying Fijians grabbed a try through Vilimoni Botitu but never looked like earning their first win over the All Blacks in their eighth meeting with the three-times world champions.

Proctor made an impressive Test debut in the centres, the 25-year-old making several line breaks and combining nicely with Anton Lienert-Brown in the midfield as well as crossing for a try.

The All Blacks headed into the break with a comfortable 26-5 lead and held the Pacific islanders scoreless in the second half.

Flankers Rob Valetini and Fraser McReight scored two tries apiece as Australia won a third straight match under new coach Joe Schmidt with a scrappy 40-29 victory over Georgia at Sydney Football Stadium.

The loose forwards both crossed either side of the break and were joined on the scoresheet by centre Hunter Paisami and prop Isaac Kailea to give the Wallabies three successive wins for the first time since late 2021.

Australia played for 20 minutes with 14 men after winger Filipo Daugunu was shown a yellow card, later upgraded to a red, just before half-time for kneeing an opponent in the head while trying to block a kick.

Georgia threw caution to the wind with the extra man and drew to within two points of Australia at 26-24 early in the second half after scoring two tries, but their challenge faded once they lost full-back Davit Niniashvili to a yellow card.

"The boys are very happy with that," said Australia skipper Allan Ala'alatoa.

"Our discipline didn't help us and we had to roll our sleeves up, especially with Filipo out for 20 minutes of the game. I'm just very proud of the effort."
