Hugo Keenan got on the scoresheet but Ireland missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the Madrid Sevens after an extra-time defeat to New Zealand.

The Leinster full-back scored the equalising try in overtime but a missed conversion sent the Pool B clash into an additional period in which New Zealand scored off the first possession to win the match 22-17.

Earlier, Ireland lost out to table-toppers Fiji, 26-21, in a game that also went to overtime.

James Topping's side will play for the minor places in tomorrow’s play-off matches.

Meanwhile, Ireland Women had a mixed day in Pool B where they eventually finished third and also missed out on a HSBC SVNS semi-final.

They began with a 31-5 defeat to France before beating Fiji 26-19 thanks to an Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe hat-trick and a try from Béibhinn Parsons.
