Here we take a closer look at just some of the coaches who have cut their teeth with Ireland's U20s and have a profound influence on the game beyond.

Allen Clarke

Allen Clarke was head coach at Ospreys until 2019

Allen Clarke, a former Ulster, Northampton Saints and Ireland player, seamlessly transitioned into coaching after retiring as a player. As the head coach of Ireland U20s between 2009-2011, Clarke significantly contributed to the development of emerging talents, leaving an indelible mark on the team's growth, this included an U20s Six Nations Championship win in 2010.

Beyond his tenure with Ireland U20s, Clarke's coaching journey extended to influential roles with prominent teams including Ulster. His experience included serving as the forwards coach for the Ospreys, and ultimately becoming head coach.

Nigel Carolan

In 2021 Carolan was appointed as an assistant coach at Glasgow Warriors

Nigel Carolan, a former Connacht player, emerged as a prominent figure during his tenure as the Ireland U20s head coach. Carolan's coaching journey took a significant turn when he was appointed as the assistant coach to the Irish U20s under Allen Clarke in 2008, a role he held until 2010.

In October 2014, Carolan ascended to the position of head coach, marking a new chapter in his coaching career. Over the course of three Six Nations campaigns and two World Championships, Carolan's leadership culminated in the team's impressive runner-up finish in the 2016 World Championship.

His coaching acumen saw him appointed as head of Connacht's academy, and ultimately as the Connacht Backs Coach. In 2021 Carolan was appointed as an assistant coach at Glasgow Warriors, focussing on attack.

Noel McNamara

Noel McNamara - attack coach with Bordeaux Begles

Noel McNamara's tenure as the Ireland U20s coach showcased his ability to inspire and mould young talents into formidable players. McNamara's strategic insights and emphasis on a cohesive team dynamic propelled the squad to notable achievements including a Grand Slam in 2019, and a Triple Crown in 2020.

His coaching journey marked a pivotal chapter in the development of Irish rugby and has followed an arc that has seen him evolve from schools coach at Clongowes Wood, through underage and 'A’ roles in the Leinster ranks, to attack coach with URC side The Sharks, and currently as attack coach with Bordeaux Begles who currently sit third in the Top 14.

Paul O’Connell

O'Connell joined the U20s in 2017

The legendary Paul O'Connell brought his wealth of experience and leadership to the Ireland U20s coaching setup in 2017, leaving his role as an advisor with the Munster Academy.

His influence extended beyond tactical expertise, instilling a winning mentality and fostering a culture of resilience. O'Connell's transition from player to coach added a unique dimension, enriching the developmental journey of the U20s squad.

He later joined Stade Français as forwards coach, where O'Connell's former Young Munster and Munster team-mate Mike Prendergast was also a coach. In January 2021, O'Connell joined the Ireland national men's team coaching set-up as forwards coach.

Richie Murphy

Richie Murphy was appointed head coach of the U20s in 2021

Current Ireland U20s Head Coach, Richie Murphy was appointed in 2021 and has delivered two U20s Grand Slams in 2022 and 2023, as well as a runner-up finish in the U20s World Championship.

Having worked as skills & kicking coach with the men’s team since 2013, Murphy was co-opted onto the Ireland coaching team in 2013 by Joe Schmidt while an assistant coach at Leinster Rugby. At Leinster Murphy helped drive the province to Heineken Cup & PRO 12 title successes.

He played a key role in the sustained success of the Ireland national team including Six Nations Championships in 2013 and 2014, a Six Nations Grand Slam in 2018 and a number of Irish Rugby firsts – victories over New Zealand (2016 & 2018), a first Test victory in South Africa (2016) and a series win over Australia (2018). Murphy has a proven track record in elite player development helping players progress from underage representative rugby through to senior national honours.

These coaching maestros, fueled by their passion and expertise, have not only shaped young talents but have ignited a legacy that resonates far beyond the field, embodying the true essence of rugby's coaching excellence.
