Three changes as Ireland U20s name team for Italy

Ireland are looking for a 12th consecutive U20 Six Nations victory

Brian Gleeson will miss Ireland's U20 Six Nations meeting with Italy on Friday night, as head coach Richie Murphy makes three changes to his side from their impressive 37-31 win against France on Saturday.

Gleeson, who has already played nine times this season for Munster, scored Ireland's second try in last week's impressive bonus-point win, but isn't included in the squad for the visit of the Italians as he waits for the results of a scan on an ankle injury.

His fellow Munster man Luke Murphy comes in to start at number eight, joining Ulster pair Joe Hopes and Bryn Ward in the back row.

Captain Evan O'Connell is retained in the second row, where he packs down alongside UCD and Leinster's Alan Spicer.

The other two changes to the team come in the front row. Stephen Smyth starts at hooker with Danny Sheahan dropping to the bench, while Ulster's Jacob Boyd starts at tighthead with Andrew Sparrow not involved.

The backline is unchanged, with Jack Murphy, son of head coach Richie, starting at out-half, paired up with Oliver Coffey.

Connacht's Hugh Gavin partners Wilhelm de Klerk in the centre with a back three of Ben O'Connor; Finn Treacy and Hugo McLaughlin.

Murphy has strong options among the replacements bench as Danny Sheahan, Ben Howard, Patreece Bell, Billy Corrigan and Sean Edogbo provide the reinforcements up front, with backs Tadhg Brophy, Sean Naughton and Ethan Graham completing the 23.

Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that this summer's World Rugby U20 Championship will take place in South Africa from 29 June to 19 July.

Ireland will take on Australia, Georgia and Italy in Pool B, as they look to match their run to the final in 2023.

The games will be played across in the Western Cape regions of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, with the Cape Town Stadium hosting the final on 19 July.
