Warren Gatland changes seven for Wales' Twickenham trip

Wales head coach Warren Gatland has made seven changes to his side for Saturday's Guinness Six Nations meeting with England at Twickenham (live on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player), in response to his team's disastrous first half against Scotland last week.

In a boost, centre George North returns from injury to start in midfield at the expense of Owen Watkin, who drops out of the squad entirely after their 27-26 defeat to the Scots, in which they fell behind 27-0 early in the second half.

Watkin is one of three players from last week's starting line-up to be cut from the matchday 23, while another two - James Botham and Sam Costelow - miss out due to injury.

Gareth Thomas, Elliot Dee and Keiron Assiratti come in to form a brand new front row, as Corey Domachowski and Ryan Elias drop to the bench, with Leon Brown omitted from the squad.

Dafydd Jenkins continues as captain in the second row alongside Adam Beard, while Alex Mann is promoted to the starting team at blindside flanker, replacing the injured Botham.

Last week's Player of the Match Aaron Wainwright continues at number 8, with Tommy Reffell completing the pack at openside flanker.

Tomos Williams and Ioan Llyod start together in the half-backs after impressing off the bench last week, with scrum-half Gareth Davies dropped by Gatland.

North and Tompkins team up in the centre, while the back three is unchanged as Rio Dyer, Josh Adams and last week's debutant Cameron Winnett (below) retain their places at wing and full-back.

"We've been critical and tough on ourselves this week. That first half [against Scotland] was nowhere near the standards we expect. We simply cannot start the same way this Saturday," Gatland said.

"We showed in the second half against Scotland what we are capable of. Now it’s about building on that performance and playing with some tempo from the off.

"We’ve made a few changes to the starting line-up this weekend which gives opportunities to the players coming in. We need to be accurate and keep our discipline.

"This is a massive game, not only because of the history and what it means to everyone in Wales. But it’s an opportunity to get things on track a bit more. England are in a rebuilding phase. We’ll go there with a lot of confidence we can build on that second-half and belief."
