New Munster captain to named in 'next couple of weeks'

Mike Prendergast expects Munster to name Peter O'Mahony's successor as captain over the "next couple of weeks".

The Ireland flanker surprisingly stepped down from the role last month after serving 10 years as skipper.

Among the names mentioned to replace him are Ireland internationals Tadhg Beirne and Craig Casey, and World Cup winner Jean Kleyn.

Jack O’Donoghue and Diarmuid Barron have both been stand-in captains during the early stages of the BKT United Rugby Championship.

Head coach Graham Rowntree has insisted he won't be rushed into a decision and for the moment the call will be made week to week.

"I just think Graham wants to leave it for a couple of weeks and see how people operate," attack coach Prendergast told RTÉ Sport.

"Obviously, he’s been here for a good few years but he wants to see it from a leadership point of view.

"Diarmuid is in there at the moment, doing a very good job, wants to see how that goes. He definitely doesn’t have his mind made up.

"We talk about it, not a huge amount but we trust Wig [Graham Rowntree] to make the right decision there from a staff point of view.

"He’s getting a feel of how people are going about their day-to-day business in terms of leadership etc.

"There’s a couple of names that people are talking about but that [decision] will be made over the next, I would imagine, couple of weeks or so."

Hooker Barron [above], who signed a new contract this week, has been in fine form this season, scoring two tries in six appearances.

Asked if he was the type to knock on the boss’s door and make his case, the 25-year-old said: "No, I think it’s an actions thing.

"He understands well what a captain of Munster should look like and how they should behave.

"I don’t think knocking on the door would make any difference. He comes from a club [Leicester] that has very similar values to what Munster have and I’m sure he’ll pick the right person regardless.

"It was a huge honour [to be asked to captain this season]. I’m very proud of it and I know my family are very proud so I was delighted with it.

"Pete has been outstanding for the last 10 years. If it was to be an option it would be great but I’m firmly focused on doing what I can for the team and I haven’t thought about it.

"I know Wig is taking it week to week. I’m sure whoever it is will step up and do a good job."

Munster take on Bayonne in Thomond Park on Saturday [5.30pm] in the opening round of the Investec Champions Cup.

While the hosts are steeped in European history and have won the tournament twice, Bayonne have been yo-yoing between the Top14 and ProD2 over recent years and were more regularly seen in the Challenge Cup.

They are tenth in the French league having won their four home games and lost all five away ties.

The squad they name on Friday afternoon will say much about their attitude towards the competition but Prendergast reckons they have too much quality not to be a threat.

The former Munster scrum-half said: "Absolutely [we want a good contest].

"And I'm sure they will [take it seriously]. They’ve had a decent start to the league, they are only four points out from the top six.

"Last year they got into the Top14 and managed to make the top six. You have to be a good side to do that, knowing how competitive it is over there."
