Former Ireland international Adam Byrne has confirmed his retirement from rugby at the age of 29.

The winger has decided not to pursue another move in the game, having departed Connacht at the end of last season.

Byrne played 66 times and scored 24 tries for Leinster in an injury hit career, making his debt at the age of just 18 in 2012, while also spending his final season at Connacht.

The Kill native enjoyed career-best form in the 2016/17 season, scoring 10 tries in 20 games for the province, leading to his Ireland debut against Argentina in November 2017.

A former Ireland Sevens international, a series of hamstring and quad injuries saw him sidelined for more almost two years before making his comeback against Zebre in October 2021, scoring two tries upon his return.

Byrne joined Connacht in the summer of 2022, but his season out west was also disrupted by injury as he scored three tries in six games.

Having left Connacht a year early, he had been linked with a move to MLR in the USA, but he confirmed his retirement from rugby on Wednesday.

"The time has come for me to hang up the boots," he said in a post on social media.

"Never in a million years did I think Rugby would bring me on the journey it has.

"The highs were some of the best days of my life, and the lows taught me a lot of valuable lessons.

"I want to thank everyone who supported me on my journey, all of the kind words, messages and gestures went a lot further than you ever could have imagined."
